On teaching my mom Twitter

I love my mom and I’m glad she’s catching on to that whole crazy Twitter thing, but she’s doing it wrong. Mom, you need to know how to have a conversation on Twitter.

Each time you send an update to Twitter it’s called a “tweet.” To respond to another person or to mention or even just sort of generally associate them with your tweet you use a system called @reply. An @reply works like this:

PersonA: It sure is a nice day outside, what wonderful weather! I think I’ll go stand near a playground and… watch.

PersonB: @PersonA I’m glad to see you’re getting some sun! Make sure you bring candy!

By the way, in the Twitter world everyone is addressed as @username.

Maybe one day we can move on to the complex and powerful practice known as a #hashtag, but for now let’s take baby steps.
